Loni Anderson as Jennifer Marlowe
This is my first crack at her. There isn't much character, attitude, and personality in this initial sketch. I'll practice her a bit, then make a drawing that isn't so static and boring. It's not easy trying to caricature her, and at the same time keep her as drop dead beautiful as she is. Just looking at this sketch now, I have an idea that might work, if I can pull it off....wait and see.

Venus Fly Trap in color
Here's another one to add to my series of WKRP caricatures. It's only the second one I've cleaned and colored, the other one being ANDY TRAVIS. But I do have sketches of ARTHUR CARLSON, HERB TARLEK, JOHNNY FEVER, and BAILEY QUARTERS.

ARTHUR CARLSON
VENUS FLYTRAP
TIM REID as VENUS FLY TRAP. This was not my first attempt at Venus. I filled 3 pages with a bunch of sketches that were completely unsuccessful. This is the first one that is worth saving. Tim Reid was great as Venus. He was one of the straightest characters of the whole cast. His clothes were outrageous, but his personality was pretty normal compared to the caricatured personalities that surrounded him, same with Andy Travis.

HERB TARLEK
This is my first stab at FRANK BONNER as HERB TARLEK from WKRP IN CINCINNATI. The entire cast was memorable, but Herb was a real stand out. He was a jerk character that was likable at times. He was simultaneously loathed and sympathetic. He had some moments of fantastic comedy. His interactions with Jeniffer Marlowe/Loni Anderson were hilariously unforgettable. There are elements of this first sketch that I like and others I need to keep working on.Thursday, November 01, 2007

ANDY TRAVIS take 2
It's GARY SANDY again. Not too much different from the first caricature, this time I didn't show his eyes and his neck gets wider toward his shoulders. More Gary Sandy/Andy Travis yet to come!
ANDY TRAVIS
GARY SANDY was perfect as ANDY TRAVIS in WKRP IN CINCINNATI. This is my first attempt at his caricature. After sketching out this first one, I have ideas for the next go at him. I'll see how far I can push certain things before it looses the likeness to Andy Travis.

DR. JOHNNY FEVER from WKRP in Cincinnati
Bailey Quarters from WKRP in Cincinnati
I am working on a pic of the whole cast from the show. It was one of my favorite shows of all time. Every single character was unique, interesting, had an individual look and was an archetypal character. This BAILEY QUARTERS. JAN SMITHERS was perfect in this role; shy, quiet, smart, but bursting with potential and ambition underneath those glasses.

My approach for this WKRP drawing, is not do to caricatures in the traditional sense. By that I mean I am not necessarily doing a caricature of Jan Smithers here. My approach is more like a character design approach. I am not trying to get a specific likeness of Jan Smithers, I am trying to capture the essence of her Bailey Quarters character.

I’m still working on her. I think I’m getting close to what I want.

Here she is…for now. She may be tweaked a bit before the final design is drawn. But I am pretty happy with this one. Now, onto the next WKRP character.
